HAPPY EARTH DAY TO YOU ALL!

OF MEADOWS, OCEAN AND FLAME

Sally Somerton

She is not quiet, this Mother of earth,

she hums through each meadow in blossom and birth.

In wildflower fields bright colours run free,

she dances through petal, through root, and through tree.

The elders stand tall in their slow, steady grace,

with branches that reach into light-filled space.

Their roots whisper stories both ancient and deep,

of storms they have weathered, of secrets they keep.

The bees drift in gold through the soft summer air,

from bloom unto bloom with a diligent care.

While birds thread the sky with a bright, lilting song,

reminding the world it is right to belong.

Where land splits open and fire once roared,

the bones of the earth in dark silence are stored.

Now softened by moss and the passage of years,

held gently by wind and the salt of old tears.

The ocean moves steady, both tender and wild,

at once ancient mother, at once restless child.

She crashes and whispers along rugged shore,

then gathers her secrets to carry once more.

And wind, oh the wind, so untamed and so free,

comes calling your name through both land and through sea.

It lifts what is heavy, it loosens your hold,

it speaks of a freedom both fearless and bold.

So step into her with your heart open wide,

let go of the need to control or to hide.

For you are not separate, never alone,

you’re flesh of her flesh and you’re bone of her bone.

This wild, living Mother, in all that you see,

is not just around you, she is you, and me.
