World Book Day: A Story Still Becoming

There’s something quietly powerful about a book before it is finished.

Not yet held in your hands. Not yet resting on a shelf. Still shifting… still breathing… still becoming.

That’s where I am.

Between pages. Between edits. Between the life I’ve lived and the stories still asking to be told.

Out on the island, the elements don’t wait for perfection. The wind doesn’t pause to consider its direction. The ocean doesn’t edit its waves before they reach the shore. Storms arrive as they are, untamed, unapologetic, whole.

And somewhere in the midst of that, I write.

My fiction is currently in its editing season, a different kind of creativity. Less wild, perhaps, but no less intimate. It’s where the story deepens, where characters reveal what I didn’t yet know about them, where small details begin to carry weight.

An island. A woman in midlife. Change that doesn’t politely knock. Mystery that lingers beneath the surface. And the quiet, steady pull of something more.

Alongside that work, the shaping, the refining, there is another thread I follow.

The unexpected one.

Poetic prose that arrives like a tide I didn’t plan for. Poems that form from a single breath, a shift in light, the curve of coastline, the hush before rain.

These are not outlined. They are not plotted. They are discovered.

I write as a pantser, a discovery writer. Which is a rather gentle way of saying I often don’t know where I’m going until I arrive.

And yet… that’s where the magic lives.

In the not knowing. In the wandering. In trusting the story, whether long or short, to find its own way through me.

World Book Day often celebrates the finished book. The polished spine. The final word.

But today, I’m honouring something else.

The middle.

The messy, alive, in-progress, half-formed, beautifully uncertain middle.

Because stories aren’t only meant to be read. They are meant to be lived, written, rewritten, and sometimes completely reimagined.

So if you feel drawn to stories shaped by wild coastlines, shifting skies, and the quiet courage of midlife change…If you enjoy a thread of mystery, a touch of emotional depth, and words that occasionally wander off-script into something more poetic…

Come walk this path with me.

You’ll find drafts and discoveries. Fragments and fully-formed moments. Island winds woven through paragraphs. And the unfolding of a story that, much like life, refuses to be rushed.

This is not just about a book.

It’s about a journey.

And it’s one I’d love to share with you.
